The culturally rich small town of Paro nestles at the heart of a quiet and beautiful valley, characterised by many sacred sites and historical Dzongs. Of these, Tigers Nest is the most important, and has become one of the most iconic monasteries in Bhutan.
Paro has many small historical temples and monasteries tucked away that you could easily spend many a day exploring them and discovering so much of Bhutan’s rich heritage. However the trek up to Taktsang Palphug Monastery or Tigers Nest will most likely be the highlight of your stay here.
The walk to the monastery takes a couple of hours and can be rather challenging in places. It is best to start early morning before the crowds arrive. There’s a small kiosk half way up that has fantastic views across to the monastery, but the further you walk on the vistas get even better.
The final stretch brings you to the working monastery itself, which will reward your efforts once you enter the old monastery.
Paro is also a good base for some of the best trekking in Bhutan; you can choose anything from short four day treks to more challenging excursions of up to 20 days or more.
