Bagan is a rich and beautiful archaeological site with over 3000 stupas seemingly sprouting on both banks of the Irrawaddy River, dotted over a range of 40 square kilometres. Built during the Golden Era of Bagan between the 11thand 13thCenturies, Bagan ranks as one of the marvels of Asia - an absolute must on any visit to Burma.
Bagan is at its best when seen from up high - you can gently float above the site in a hot air balloon at dawn - or alternatively experience it from the comfort of a pony trap, clip-clopping between the stupas.
We try vary your experiences in Bagan, as with over 3000 pagodas to see we think that might get a bit much. We recommend visiting a few of the most spectacular and historical ones - unless of course you want to visit more then we can certainly arrange this. A highlight at the end of your day is to view the stunning sunset on top of a pagoda, a truly dramatic Burma holiday experience.
An hour or so drive away from the pagodas of Bagan is the spiritual and very holy Mount Popa. This hill dates back to the country's animist past. You too can join the Burmese climbing up the 777 steps to the top of the hill to worship and make offering to the Nat’s Spirits. It is no problem if the climb is too much; we can arrange a lunch for you with spectacular views over the stupas.
