Hakuba is famous for its winter sports scene, especially downhill skiing when it was held at the 1998 Winter Olympics. When the snow comes, it does so in splendid style, and with excellent quality, covering the valley from mid December until late March.
The slopes of Hakuba are fairly empty from Monday to Friday as the Japanese mainly come for the weekend, so you will more than likely have the runs to yourself. There are also many hot baths or onsen's in Hakuba with a few being outdoors; these provide a perfect end to a day spend on the slopes, relaxing and resting those aching muscles. You can also use Hakuba as a base to visit the Snow Monkeys in Yudanaka, who also enjoy relaxing in their own onsen!
